A ROSAT Survey of Contact Binary Stars
نویسندگان
چکیده
Contact binary stars are common variable stars which are all believed to emit relatively large fluxes of x-rays. In this work we combine a large new sample of contact binary stars derived from the ROTSE-I telescope with x-ray data from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) to estimate the x-ray volume emissivity of contact binary stars in the galaxy. We obtained x-ray fluxes for 140 contact binaries from the RASS, as well as 2 additional stars observed by the XMMNewton observatory. From these data we confirm the emission of x-rays from all contact binary systems, with typical luminosities of approximately 1.0 ×10 erg s. Combining calculated luminosities with an estimated contact binary space density, we find that contact binaries do not have strong enough x-ray emission to account for a significant portion of the galactic x-ray background. New SSS from the ROSAT PSPC
We have performed Chandra observations during the past 3 years of 5 of the M31 supersoft X-ray sources discovered with ROSAT. Surprisingly, only one of these sources has been detected, despite a predicted detection of about 20-80 counts for these sources. This has motivated a thorough check of the ROSAT M31 survey I data, including a relaxation of the hardness ratio requirement used to select s...
متن کاملOn X-ray Variability in Active Binary Stars
We have compared the X-ray emissions of active binary stars observed at various epochs by the Einstein and ROSAT satellites in order to investigate the nature of their X-ray variability. The main aim of this work is to determine whether or not active binaries exhibit long-term variations in X-ray emission, perhaps analogous to the observed cyclic behavior of solar magnetic activity. We find tha...
متن کاملA Systematic Search for Supersoft X-Ray Sources in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey
We have conducted a systematic search for supersoft X-ray sources using the ROSAT all-sky survey data. With the optical identi cation of the selected sources being almost complete, we discuss the statistics of the various source classes and their observability. Besides supersoft close binary sources this search also can be used to estimate the number of isolated neutron stars in the Galaxy, suc...
متن کاملA search for hidden white dwarfs in the ROSAT EUV survey
The ROSAT WFC survey has provided us with evidence for the existence of a previously unidentified sample of hot white dwarfs (WD) in non-interacting binary systems, through the detection of EUV and soft X-ray emission. These stars are hidden at optical wavelengths due to their close proximity to much more luminous main sequence (MS) companions (spectral type K or earlier). However, for companio...
متن کاملThe Rosat All-sky Survey of Active Binary Coronae. Iii. Quiescent Coronal Properties for the by Draconisètype Binaries
We present X-ray observations of 35 active late-type BY Draconis dwarf binary systems and 28 evolved binary systems, similar in nature to the RS Canum Venaticorum systems, obtained with the Position Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) during the ROSAT All-Sky Survey phase of the mission. Of this sample, 52 targets were detected in exposures of roughly 600 s or less. When these new data are co...
